YouTube announced today two new initiatives designed to encourage and promote female creators across its network.

The first project is a year-long campaign, in partnership with the United Nations (U.N.), to support the appointment of leading women as Change Ambassadors for the video platform’s Sustainable Development Action programme, through which the group will advocate for gender equality in the industry. The second scheme is an investment strategy, which has initially funded over 50 videos through the tech giant’s global Spaces initiative. This new campaign hopes to help more women get involved with video, both on an off-screen.

Kicking off the U.N. campaign, video creators Ingrid Nilsen, Chika Yoshida, Hayla Ghazal, Louise Pentland, Jackie Aina, Yuya and Taty Ferreira, have been announced as the first Change Ambassadors. The women will work alongside the U.N. to serve as role models and ‘inspire and activate their global fan communities’, as well as other women and girls around the world, by posting videos which promote gender equality.

Working at worldwide ‘Spaces’– the company’s dedicated production facilities – global YouTube stars Anna Akana (U.S), Alexys Fleming (U.S.), Julia Veiga Faria (Brazil), Em Ford (UK), Nilam Farooq (Germany) and Kuma Miki (Japan), have also recently worked as creative directors, mentoring young female creators. The venues included YouTube studios in Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, New York, Berlin and Sao Paulo.

According to YouTube, the resulting videos cover a wide range of topics such as discussions on women in the workplace, health, science, engineering, music, comedy, and female leaders, as well as featuring original scripted content. The videos will be released from today across the YouTube Spaces channel, and the creators’ own channels, just ahead of International Women’s Day on 8 March.

Commenting on the new initiatives, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said: ‘YouTube has always been a platform where women of all ages and backgrounds can find their voice and tell their stories […] Through our global YouTube Spaces program and new partnership with the U.N., we’ll strengthen female voices on YouTube and around the world.”
